It's that time of year again and our VFW Post 1324 and Auxiliary members are out at several of the Fred Meyer and Safeway stores in Clackamas, Damascus, Gladstone, Happy Valley, Milwaukie, Oak Grove, Oregon City, West Linn and Wilsonville. Plus Bi-Mart, Coastal Farm and Home Supply, Pete's Coffee and Tea, Shari's and Wall-Mart.  If you see them please donate.  We put that money to good use. If you want to know what we do with all the donations, please ask for a flyer while you are there.  If you aren't in my local area, please donate to your local VFW Post and Auxiliary.

The Three Rivers VFW Post 1324 will be hosting our annual Memorial Day Open House  

From 12:00 pm (noon) to 5 pm.

Patriots Penn and Voice Of Democracy Scholarship awards

Veterans Of Foreign Wars (VFW) National Scholarship Programs

PATRIOT'S PEN

Each year more than 125,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $50,000, with each first-place state winner receiving a minimum of $500 at the national level. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.

THE 2016-17 THEME IS: THE AMERICA I BELIEVE IN 
Due October 31, 2016

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY Scholarship for 9-12 grades

Scout Of The Year Award

SCOUT OF THE YEAR

Some of the VFW's earliest ties to the community involve youth groups and perhaps none are stronger or more lasting than the relationship between the VFW and America's scouting organizations. In fact, VFW's partnership with the Boy Scouts of America dates back to 1915 when VFW Post 2100 helped to establish Troop 1 in Everett, Washington.

Through the VFW's Scout of the Year program, members of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts who display standout citizenship, patriotism and love of country have the opportunity to be rewarded with college scholarships of up to $5,000.

HOW TO ENTER:

Scouts should submit the completed VFW Scouting Scholarship form, resume of high school activities, scouting record, community service record and letters of recommendation to a local VFW Post no later than March 1. Locate your local Post here.

Note: A Scout can enter through ONE VFW Post only.

Teacher Of The Year!

Do you know an Awesome Teacher who teaches Americanism and Patriotism?

 The Veterans Of Foreign Wars (VFW) is seeking nominees for Teacher Of The Year. Needs to be turned in by February 15, 2016

This is a national program.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Without our nation’s veterans, America wouldn't be the great nation it is today. Our youth deserve to learn about our rich history, traditions and the role of our veterans in creating and shaping America.

The VFW Teacher of the Year award contest recognizes three exceptional teachers for their outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism to their students. Each year, a classroom elementary, junior high and high school teacher whose curriculum focuses on citizenship education topics—for at least half of the school day in a classroom environment—can be nominated for the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. Winners receive:

A $1,000 award for professional development expenses.

A $1,000 award for his/her school.

Two award plaques: one for the teacher, the other for his/her school.

An all-expenses-paid trip to attend a VFW conference to receive their award.

A visit from the Ladies Auxiliary National President.

It was such an honor to welcome the Ladies Auxiliary National President Ann Panteleakos to Oregon City and our Post 1324.   Below is a picture (L-R) of our President Tracy Bogart, our District President Patricia Carroll, our State President Linda Rose, and the Ladies Auxiliary National President Ann Panteleakos.

We had Ladies Auxiliary members from Canby, Molalla, Salem, Sandy and Redmond OR. We also had a few Post members, Jim McDonald, Tracy Bogart, Ann Panteleakos, DJ Ruger, Maurie and in the back is Tom. I have to apologize because I don't know Maurie's or Tom's Last names or Post positions.  They are all great guys and fun to work with.  So glad they came today.

Ann Spoke today about recruiting new members and how important that we rebuild our membership.  We lost 40,000 members nation wide this last year.  If you or a member of your Family are Veterans of Foreign Wars, meaning you/they went over seas, you could be eligible to join the Ladies Auxiliary and help our Veterans even more.  With so many of our family members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan we have big shoes to fill.  We need all the help we can get.  

We just learned of some local families who's spouse's have been deployed recently are in need of help any one can help and if you can spare a few cans of food or really just about anything that would help a lot.  You can contact me 503-708-6889 or you can stop by the post on Thursday evenings from 6-8 pm or you can call the VFW Post 1324 503-655-6969 and arrange a time to drop items off.
